Primary Mental Health Team

Primary Mental Health Team

We provide assessment to people with mental health issues who are not in crisis.

About us

Our Primary Mental Health Team is made up of multi-disciplinary mental health clinicians. We provide one-off, non-urgent mental health assessment and treatment recommendations.

You can use our service if you:

  • live in the City of Banyule or the Shire of Nillumbik
  • are aged between 18 and 64 years
  • are managed by a primary care provider such as a GP
  • are not in crisis or a current client of the mental health service.

Our team can provide a mental health assessment and connect you to an appropriate mental health service and supports in the wider community.

Our services

We are a short-term assessment service. Our main role is to support primary providers (such as GPs) to care for people with mental health concerns.

We provide the following services:

  • biopsychosocial mental health assessment
  • diagnostic clarification
  • medication review
  • treatment recommendations

In some situations, we can offer brief psychological intervention (up to 4 sessions). This is a decision made by the assessing clinician in collaboration with the client.

Please note

We can only provide general mental health assessments. We do not provide diagnostic clarification for specialised areas such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder.

For the medication review service, the referral must be from the GP. We do not prescribe, our recommendations will be sent to the GP.

Referrals

For clients and families

You can refer yourself or someone that you're concerned about to our mental health services.

Call our mental health triage service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for information, assessment and referral.

Phone: 1300 859 789

For health professionals

GPs can refer directly via email using our referral form. These referrals will be triaged once a week and assessments booked within two to four weeks.

Most clinics within the north-east area have copies of the email address and referral form, however please call us if your clinic does not.

For all other referrals, find out how to refer your patient to mental health.
