Hospital mental health

We provide mental health care to patients in general hospital wards.

About us

Hospital Mental Health will see you if you are:

  • A current patient in any ward at Austin Health (excluding the psychiatric units)
  • A patient with ongoing treatment provided by Austin Health

Hospital Mental Health care is provided by two different units: Consultation Liaison Psychiatry and Clinical and Health Psychology, who each provide different services.

Our services

Our Consultation Liaison Psychiatry team provide the following services:

  • Assessment and management of your mental health while you are in a medical or surgical ward
  • Advice to medical and surgical teams about your mental health needs
  • The Constant Patient Observer Program, which provides increased observation, supervision and care in situations where we think you may be a risk to yourself

Our clinics

We run the following clinics:

  • Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic - offered for patients who are able to be treated in a community setting
  • Clinical & Health Psychology Outpatient Clinic - treats anxiety disorders and depression, and can liaise with your GP and community nurses

You can be referred to us from all medical, surgical, rehabilitation and specialty units across Austin Health.

The most common referrals are for:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Delirium
  • Symptoms such as pain or fatigue that have no clear physical cause

The Clinical and Health Psychology Outpatient Service also accepts selected referrals from the community.
