Falls and Balance Assessment Clinic

Falls and Balance Assessment Clinic

We provide a specialist diagnostic service for people who are having falls or balance related problems. The service is especially targeted towards people who are not sure why they are having falls.

What we do

Our clinic is staffed by a geriatrician and physiotherapists who have expert knowledge and experience in falls, balance, and mobility.

We provide the following services:

  • Diagnose the reason for falls
  • Provide education, support, and strategies to reduce identified risk factors for falls
  • Refer people to other health services for ongoing management and treatment if required

The Falls and Balance Assessment Clinic is part of the suite of services provided by the Health Independence Program (HIP).

What to expect

The initial appointment will generally include an assessment by a geriatrician and physiotherapist. If indicated, you may only need to see one of these clinicians.

The assessment will include an assessment of falls risk factors, functional status, physical examination, and cognitive assessment if required.

What to bring

When you come to hospital for your appointment, you need to bring:

  • Medicare card
  • Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes) including herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Any recent x-ray, brain imaging, or test results if you have them or if they weren’t completed at an Austin Health site
  • Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame (if applicable)
