Specialist Clinics

We operate one of the largest specialist clinic services in Victoria.

Temporary changes to appointments

Where possible, Specialist Clinics (outpatient) appointments are being held by phone or Telehealth, rather than in person.

Find out more about coming to hospital during COVID-19.

For more information about coronavirus, visit Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS): Coronvirus.

Appointments

  • You will be contacted before your appointment to let you know if it will be conducted by phone or Telehealth. Attend as normal unless told otherwise.
  • You must attend your Specialist Clinic appointment alone if the appointment is being held at the hospital. This is to help us manage the risks associated with COVID-19.
  • Carers must only attend with the patient if the patient is a child, has behavioural needs, or requires assistance with translation or mobility
  • Children must not attend appointments with you, unless they are the patient

If you think you're at risk of having COVID-19, call our hotline on 03 9496 6606 or complete our COVID-19 screening tool.

Text messages

We've introduced text messages to notify you of appointment changes:

  • You may receive a text message from 'AustinHosp' asking you to confirm or cancel your appointment via a web link
  • Respond to the message by clicking the link as soon as possible (within 24 hours)

If you have questions or concerns or can't attend your appointment, then let us know by:

About us

We operate one of the largest specialist clinic services in Victoria.

We support 54 medical and surgical units, including three statewide services:

  • Liver Transplant Unit
  • Victorian Spinal Cord Service (VSCS)
  • Victorian Respiratory Support Service (VRSS)

Every year, Specialist Clinics manages more than 280,000 outpatient clinic attendances, processes 120,000 new referrals, and answers 190,000 phone calls from patients.

Specialist Clinics provides specialist medical, surgical or paediatric assessment and care including associated allied health and diagnostic testing.

We accept referrals from GPs and specialists, as well as internal referrals for people following treatment in the emergency department or when staying in hospital.

Waiting times

We continue to work with our medical and surgical units to reduce your wait for a clinic appointment.

The Department of Health and Human Services sets the requirement that we see all 'urgent' referrals within 30 days.

Our ability to see patients who are categorised as 'routine' is more variable depending on the demand for our services.  Patients categorised as routine are seen in turn after urgent and semi-urgent patients are seen.

Our services

We provide the following services:

  • Managing the clinic schedule
  • Making, changing and cancelling appointments
  • Answering phone calls from patients
  • Coordinating appointments and tests

Coordinate appointments and tests

Patients often need scans, tests or procedures (such as blood tests or x-rays) prior to their Specialist Clinics appointment.

Some patients also need to attend more than one Specialist Clinics appointment.

Making all these arrangements yourself can be overwhelming for some people, so we can help you coordinate your appointments and test or procedures.

If you need help to coordinate your appointments, contact us.
