About us
We provide speech pathology services to adult patients at Austin Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre.
Speech pathologists assess and manage patients with communication and swallowing problems.
Communication problems can include:
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty understanding
- Difficulty speaking
- Difficulty reading and writing
Swallowing problems can include:
- Coughing when eating and drinking
- Food getting stuck in your throat
- Difficulty chewing
Our services
Our speech pathology services are available to patients who have swallowing or communication problems, when they are in hospital or rehabilitation.
Our clinics
Outpatient Speech Pathology Clinic
This clinic is for patients with:
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Difficulty in communicating
- Difficulty in voice
- Chronic cough
- Laryngectomy
Swallowing and Voice Instrumental Assessment Clinics
We run clinics for:
- Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS) / X-ray
- Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
- Videostroboscopy of voice (Voice Analysis Clinic)

Referrals
For patients
If you are in hospital, and your care team has been managing your communication and swallowing problems, you may need to attend one of our clinics once you leave hospital. Your care team will organise a referral for you.
For health professionals

Speech Pathology services are available to all Austin Health patients.
Requests from external healthcare providers are considered on a case by case basis for specialist speech pathology services that are not available in the community, such as our swallowing and voice instrumental assessment clinics.
