Launching our Aboriginal Employment Plan

Wednesday 7 July

When Brooke Trinham finished school, medicine wasn’t on her radar.

But her interest in the human body and pathology lead to a postgraduate degree in medicine at Melbourne University and an internship with Austin Health in 2006.

“I’ve always felt part of a big family working here, and the friends I’ve made are why I enjoy working at Austin Health so much,” Brooke says.

Brooke is one of 45 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander staff members who identify at Austin Health.

The organisation is committed to increasing that number, as well as supporting and ensuring Aboriginal staff are provided with opportunities to thrive and succeed in their chosen careers, with the launch of its Aboriginal Employment Plan 2021-24 today.

The plan has been developed in consultation with our people, including our Aboriginal staff, and will guide Austin Health’s actions and priorities during the next three years.

It focuses on four opportunities, including attracting Aboriginal candidates to Austin Health, retaining and developing Aboriginal staff, continuing to create a culturally safe place for Aboriginal staff and building trusted and respected relationships with external stakeholders to support the organisation in attracting, retaining and developing Aboriginal staff.

For Brooke, Austin Health has provided her with fantastic training opportunities and offered experience in many different aspects of emergency medicine.

“It’s a great place to work as a junior doctor,” she says.

“Now that I’m a Consultant, I’m involved in the Fellowship teaching of future emergency physicians and feel very privileged to be able to give back to the institution that has helped to shape and train me.”
