About Infectious Diseases

Infectious Diseases is part of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunology.

We diagnose and treat a range of infectious diseases, including:

  • HIV
  • tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections
  • tropical medicine and travel-related infections
  • infections related to transplants or other conditions that weaken the immune system.

  • Care and specialist consultations for patients staying in hospital with infectious diseases
  • Clinic appointments (in person and via telehealth)
  • Infectious diseases support for regional hospitals in the Loddon Mallee region of Victoria

Accessing our care

You will need a referral from a GP, specialist or other health professional to to be seen at our clinics.

If you are staying in hospital, your care team will refer you to us.

What happens after referral

After we receive your referral, we will review it and contact you.

We may:

  • offer you an appointment, or
  • place you on a waiting list.

Appointment timing depends on the urgency of your condition.

To ensure your referral is accepted and clinically prioritised, please include the minimum referral information, including:
  • relevant test results
  • details of the infection or condition
  • requested clinic or service

Thursday afternoons at Austin Hospital 

Travel and tropical medicine

This clinic is for immunocompromised patients and Austin Health staff.

Thursday afternoons at Austin Hospital 

Immunocompromised host

This clinic focuses on preventing infection for people who are immunocompromised, such as cancer and organ transplant patients.

Tuesday mornings via telehealth plus embedded clinics within transplantation services
