Parent Infant Inpatient Program

The Parent Infant Inpatient Program offered by Austin Health consists of 6-beds within the Acute Psychiatric Unit, based at Austin Hospital. Specialised care is available for parents with mental illness and is inclusive of their babies under the age of 12 months. The Parent Infant Program, previously known as the mother baby unit, recognises the increased importance of fathers in their role as a primary carer and a supportive partner. Individual and holistic care is provided and based on attachment, psychodynamic and family therapy principles as well as comprehensive biopsychosocial management of parental illness. A maternal child health nurse provides assistance with childcare in combination with supportive education.

Inclusive group programs assist with:

  • Attachment
  • Parenting
  • Child Development
  • Self-Care

Individual sessions with psychologists, dance and art therapists are also available.

Admission Criteria
  • Have a mental illness
  • Baby 12 months or younger
  • Be able to be managed in an open ward
  • Live in the catchment area i.e. Northern, North East & Hume regions of Victoria
  • No active risk to baby
