Psychology in adult mental health

Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU)

The Psychologist at APU provides both primary and secondary psychological consultation services including:

  • providing psychological assessment and short-term evidence-based psychological therapies to adults presenting with a wide range of presentations including but not limited to personality disorders, trauma, mood disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, suicidal ideation and/or suicide attempts
  • diagnostic clarification and formulation for complex presentations
  • secondary consultations and case conferences with multiagency stakeholders (i.e., NDIS, Spectrum, other area mental health services etc.)
  • tertiary consultation through the provision of education, training, support and service improvement.

Eating Disorder Unit (EDU)

The psychologist in the EDU works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support adults with eating disorders that are admitted for an inpatient stay.

Their role involves assessment to inform the shared formulation for the consumer, delivery of brief psychological intervention in both individual and group formats, and participation in multidisciplinary team meetings where treatment and discharge planning are discussed.  

Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU)

The Psychologist at SECU provides both primary and secondary psychological consultation services including:

  • undertake psychological assessments and develop comprehensive management plans (i.e., positive behavioural support plans and relapse prevention plans)
  • providing evidence-based psychotherapy to patients.
  • secondary consultations and case conferences with multi-agency stakeholders (i.e., Forensicare, Department of Justice and Community Safety etc.)
  • Referral coordinator and intake assessor
  • Involvement in evaluation, quality projects and research.

Continuing Care Service (CCS)

Clinical psychologists provide psychological support through case management and short to medium term intervention for CCS clients who are experiencing significant barriers to accessing psychological services in the community.

Perinatal Mental Health Clinic (PMHC)

Based at the Heidelberg Repatriation campus, the clinic is an outpatient psychology service. Staffed by clinical psychologists and provisional psychologists, the clinic offers short term, evidence-based intervention to expectant and new parents (up to 2 years postpartum).

Treatments are offered via group programs, or individual therapy. The clinic has a strong training focus and hosts student placements throughout the year.
