About us

The Neurology Department provides all areas of neurology including the specialties of stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuroimmunology and clinical research.

Our department consists of more than 100 physicians, scientists, nursing and allied health professionals, many of whom have gained national and international recognition for their clinical and/or research efforts.

Our services

We provide the following services:

  • Acute stroke care unit
  • Comprehensive epilepsy program
  • Three dedicated video/EEG monitored rooms for patients with epilepsy
  • Care and treatment for movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease
  • A specialist immunology service that provides care and treatment for Multiple Sclerosis and other related disorders
  • One of Australia's largest hospital-based neuroscience research programs, offering access to clinical trials testing new treatments
  • a dedicated laboratories for tests to help diagnose problems of the nervous system, including EEG studies, EMG, nerve conduction studies and some ultrasounds

Standard setting in research and care

We're co-located with the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. Together, we're one of the nation's largest hospital-based neuroscience research programs. Our department's investigators and clinicians have pioneered a number of research breakthroughs. We focus on all phases of the discovery continuum, including:

  • Basic research in the genetics and biochemistry of brain function
  • Translational studies linking lab findings with potential new approaches to treatment
  • Clinical trials testing the safety and effectiveness of new treatments
  • Advanced imaging techniques to better understand the structure and function of the brain in health and disease

Many of our physicians bridge the gap between the clinic and laboratory, looking in their research for potential solutions to problems observed while caring for patients. This integrated approach hastens development of better ways to treat and prevent neurological disorders.
