We're thrilled to welcome 65 bright minds embarking on their medical journey as first-year doctors at Austin Health!

This talented cohort commenced their internship orientation last week, and will begin their transition from medical students to junior doctors with the support and guidance of our experienced staff.

Over the coming months, our new interns will be diving into a diverse array of specialties within the hospital, including general medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and the bustling Emergency Department.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Mary O'Reilly says that starting your medical career at Austin Health gives you a really solid basis, and is a “fantastic opportunity to train in any area, whether it’s primary care or specialties”.

When asked what junior doctors can expect during their first year, Mary said:

“Expect some challenges. Part of your growth is working through those challenges with support from your colleagues. Don’t forget you are not alone – you have medical, nursing, allied health and many other non-clinical support teams to help you along the way.”

Mary adds that is important for new interns to look after themselves, as well as looking after each other.

“Our patient care and staff wellbeing are our highest priorities, and we have a strong commitment to a respectful workplace. We encourage our new interns to live out our values, treat each other with kindness and respect, and also BE treated with kindness and respect.”

Medical Director Medical Workforce Unit and Deputy CMO, Kerryn Ireland-Jenkin says she is excited to welcome our new interns to Austin Health.

We value the work of our junior doctors and uphold Austin’s principle that Austin is a great place to learn, work and grow. It will be an exciting year for them, and we are here to support them on their journey,” says Kerryn.

On behalf of Austin Health, we’d like to warmly welcome and congratulate our new junior doctors, and wish them success not only this year but in their future careers.
