National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day (Children’s Day) is celebrated across the country on the 4 August every year.
It's a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to celebrate the strengths and culture of their children, who are born into stories of family, culture, and Country. They carry with them the songlines of their ancestors and culture, passed down by generations. Their Dreaming is part of our history, while their futures are their own to shape.
"At Austin Child Care Centre (ACCC), we recognise and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day. By participating in this community event, we increase understanding, value and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, knowledge and rights through cultural learning," said Donna Cosentino, Director, Austin Health Childcare Centre.
In celebrating this year, the Childcare Centre organised for each child in the Kinder room to receive the Children's Day 2022 bag.
"Liam, Harriet and Hugh were delighted to receive this special Children's Day bags. The Children’s Day 2022 bags are full of fun items and activities for children to enjoy," Donna added.
The theme this year is "My Dreaming, My Future" which prompted a group conversation about what dreaming and future means to our children.
Lexi said, "Dreaming is when I can be whatever I want" while Oliver said, "The future is what is coming up next in the world".
Some of our children then used a variety of creative art materials to express their dreams for future.
The day is an opportunity for all Australians to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that community, culture and family play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.
