In honour of Mother’s Day this year, meet our mother-daughter duo Vanessa and Alexia – two friendly faces you might spot around Austin Health!

Vanessa has been a part of the Austin Health family for over 16 years, making the leap from a city corporate environment to healthcare. Most of her time here has been spent in the Speech Pathology Department and the Tracheostomy Review and Management Service (TRAMS) as an Administrator – a role she’s thoroughly enjoyed.

“My role has a great deal of variety – each day is very different, and I’m part of a supportive and great team,” says Vanessa.

Currently, she’s taking on a new challenge with a secondment in the Legal Team and Executive Office, working as a Legal Assistant.

“It’s been such a valuable experience, and I’ve learnt so much. It’s a very different side of Austin Health, and I’ve met so many new people!”

Given her own positive experience, it’s no surprise that Vanessa encouraged her daughter, Alexia, to apply for a role at Austin Health too.

“I have been happy working here at Austin Health over the years, and thought it would be a good role for Alexia to undertake while undertaking her studies at University. It’s been a great place to work with flexibility when needed.”

Alexia joined the team late last year and is currently working as a Specialist Clinics Administrator.

“I’m really enjoying my role and the overall hospital environment,” she says. “Meeting a bunch of new people and working in such a welcoming and flexible environment has been super positive.”

When asked what influenced her to apply, Alexia says that it was definitely because of her mum’s experiences, stories and opportunities working at Austin Health.

“Reflected through her number of years at the Austin, it showed me how much she has enjoyed it and thrived.”

One of the perks of working together? Quality time.

“We love our every-so-often lunch dates,” Alexia smiles.

Alexia shares a special message for her mum: “Happy Mother’s Day to the best mum out! Thank you for all you do for me and the family, and your ongoing guidance and support!”
