It’s Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day

Crazy Socks 4 Docs is a day dedicated to raising awareness for the mental health of doctors and all health workers.

By wearing crazy socks we’re normalising conversations around mental health and breaking down the stigma faced by all health workers.

Austin Health's Acting Director of Emergency Medicine, Simon Judkins says that Crazy Socks for Docs is a day to recognise and support doctors, nurses, allied health practitioners, GPs and paramedics.

“We all have bad days and periods in our lives that are incredibly stressful and this can translate into longer term mental health issues.”

Simon explained like any disease, prevention was better than the cure.

“If we can recognise these mental health issues earlier, we can prevent their progression. It’s been a stressful time for our hospital and for health workers across Australia and the world,” he said.

Simon added there were wellbeing initiatives including peer support programs that Austin Health staff could access.

“Those involved in the program have been through psychological training and are a point-of-contact for staff who need support or who have concerns for a colleague,” he said.

“At Austin Health, and in our Emergency Department we’re always very encouraging of staff sharing their experiences and reaching out to us for support.

“By encouraging our staff to access support, we’re ensuring they’re well and can also provide the best care to patients," said Simon.

“It’s important to remember every now and again, especially in stressful times, we need to look after ourselves and to look after each other,” Paediatric Emergency Physician, Robert Millar says.

“I’ve got my fabulous green socks on because mental health obviously is an important part of everybody’s life but especially in healthcare at the moment and I think this year given everything that’s going on it’s particularly important to highlight it,” Hospital Medical Officer (HMO), Celeste Nota said.

Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day was founded by cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood after his experiences with both depression and anxiety. Every year an increasing number of health workers across Australia and around the world wear “crazy” socks, an important message of solidarity, support and hope.
