- Celebrating 60 Years of Service: Robert Winther
20 February 2026
Yesterday we celebrated Robert Winther’s 60 years of service at the Repat – a remarkable milestone for a colleague who has shaped the heart and heritage of the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
Robert began his career in February 1966, inspired by the support his family received from Legacy after his father, a WWII Kokoda veteran, passed away.
Over six decades, Robert has become far more than any one title can describe. He’s a trusted guide for veterans and families, a custodian of the Repat’s history, and a colleague known for his compassion, humour and tireless dedication.
He has helped shape cherished places of remembrance, including the Remembrance Garden and the ANZAC Memorial Chapel, and has made remembrance events important annual traditions, ensuring the heritage of the Repat is honoured and preserved for generations.
In 1996, he was appointed to the newly created Veteran Liaison Officer role. Over the past 30 years, he has shaped it into a nationally recognised model for veteran support, replicated across Australia.
What many patients and colleagues most respect about Robert is his willingness to help with things, big or small, that will make a difference for individuals and it is this quality that has made him so well known across not just the Repat campus but all of Austin Health.
A morning tea event was held in Robert’s honour with over 200 people in attendance – including Primer Minister Anthony Albanese, Member for Jagajaga Kate Thwaites MP, Austin Health Chair Ross Cooke, Austin Health CEO Jodie Geissler, the Austin Health Executive, many current and former Austin Health staff, members of the veteran community and Robert’s family – including his wife, sister, daughter and grandchildren.
Robert’s milestone was also celebrated with a story on Seven News Melbourne.
Congratulations Robert on 60 remarkable years of service.
