Review our checklist to see what you need to bring for a hospital stay.
For an overnight or longer stay
If you are coming to hospital for an overnight or longer stay, bring these items with you, where relevant:
- Current medicines and a list of medications that you've taken in the past month
- Any X-rays, ultrasounds or reports
- Referral letters
- Medicare card, private health insurance details, pension card, Department of Veterans’ Affairs card, TAC and WorkCover claim numbers including employer details
- Pharmaceutical entitlement number
- Two telephone numbers of a friend or relative
- A labelled overnight bag in which to store your clothes
- Name, address and telephone number of your local doctor
- Cotton nightie or pyjamas and personal toiletry items
- If you have appointed a Medical Treatment Decision Maker, made an Enduring Power of Attorney (Medical Treatment) or have any other advance care planning documentation, bring it with you so a copy can be placed in your medical record

For a day procedure
If you are coming to hospital for a day procedure, bring:
- A responsible adult carer to stay with you to hear instructions, help you and take you home
- Comfortable day clothes, such as a tracksuit
For a clinic appointment
If you are coming to hospital for a clinic appointment, bring:
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- TAC or Workcover claim number (if relevant)
For an overnight (or longer) rehabilitation stay
If you are coming to hospital for an overnight (or longer) rehabilitation stay, bring:
- Comfortable day clothes, such as a tracksuit, loose fitting pants and t-shirt
- Well-fitting, closed-toe styled shoes with firm grip soles. Do not wear slip-on shoes or slippers
- Personal hygiene items, such as shampoo, shaving cream, shaver, toothpaste and deodorant
For dialysis
If you are coming to hospital for dialysis, you should wear:
- Comfortable day clothes
- Warm socks and a sweatshirt or a jumper, in case you get cold during your treatment
- If you have a graft or fistula in your arm, make sure your sleeves are loose enough to roll up
- If you have a catheter in your chest, wear a shirt that opens in the front
You can also bring something to do, like a book, magazine or an iPad/tablet with headphones.
