The Palliative Care Service works with patients and their families at any point when they require support, from diagnosis through to death and bereavement.
Palliative Care Services at Austin Health are provided by a twenty-one bed inpatient unit and an acute consultancy team who visit patients across all areas of the Austin Health.

The Colorectal Surgery Unit at Austin Health performs emergency and elective surgery for patients with bowel conditions. Cases range from minor peri anal procedures to major abdominal bowel resections for cancer.
The unit undertakes a total of approximately 1,400 operations per year and has two outpatient and two preadmission clinics per week. The unit is represented by five Colorectal Surgeons, one Fellow, two Registrars, two Interns, two Stomal Therapy nurses and a Surgical Nurse Coordinator.
The Palliative care consultancy team, consisting of medical and nursing consultants, works with inpatients across Austin Health who have a life threatening illness to help them manage their pain and symptoms and maximise their wellbeing in the face of their illness.
The team may be called to assess patients when they first receive their diagnosis. They are able to help the patient, and their family, cope with the news and its implications.

Referrals for Austin Health inpatients may be made to the Nurse Consultants via telephone or pager.
Austin Health inpatients with a life limiting illness and symptoms or issues requiring specialist palliative care services.
Based on clinical urgency, via the on duty Clinical Nurse Consultant/s.
