The Department of Cardiology at Austin Health is committed to providing quality and compassionate care to patients with all forms of heart disease. The department has a strong clinical, teaching and research focus.
Our inpatient clinical service is located at the Austin Hospital and comprises a ward facility with 33 dedicated cardiac beds. Outpatient clinics are conducted at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
A state-of-the-art diagnostic area adjacent to the ward houses the cardiac catherterisation laboratories and non-invasive laboratories.
A day recovery area contains 11 beds for patients having elective day procedures.
The interventional cardiology service performs over 2000 cardiac catheterisations annually including approximately 700 percutaneous coronary interventions (stenting), balloon valvuloplasty, septal defect closures, carotid and peripheral vascular interventions.
A same day discharge coronary angioplasty program exists for selected patients.
A 24 hour, 7 day per week acute infarct angioplasty service provides immediate reperfusion therapy for patients with acute myocardial infarction.
The electrophysiology service performs approximately 300 ablation procedures and device implants for patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances per year.
The non-invasive service performs approximately 4000 transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiograms annually in addition to Holter monitoring studies and tilt table testing.
Outpatient clinics are conducted at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and include general cardiology and special interest clinics focusing on heart failure, valvular and congenital heart disease, arrhythmia, pacemaker and implantable defibrillator clinics. Approximately 5000 outpatients are seen annually.
The department also runs a cardiac rehabilitation program for patients with heart failure in conjunction with the cardiac coach program for patients with coronary heart disease.
