About us

The Intensive Care Unit provides multidisciplinary care to a wide variety of critically ill patients in a highly technological environment; we place great emphasis in the care of family and friends during a stressful time in their lives.

This state of the art facility is a great place to work in. The ICU is a 29 bed unit and provides care for over 2000 ICU, 2200 outreach and 500 liaison patients per year. Our specialities include spinal trauma, liver transplant, cardiac, neuro, orthopaedic, thoracic and general medicine; in addition to a range of medical patients. The ICU also provides a Medical Emergency Team service to the Austin Hospital, responding to approximately 2300 calls in 2013. In 2010 the ICU received the State Minsters High Commendation Award for Outstanding Team Achievement. This award recognised the high performance team culture which we constantly strive to evolve.

Significant research projects are undertaken both within the Unit and as part of multi-centre studies. Over the past 15 years Austin ICU has produced over 700 publications.

Vocational trainees in ICU, Anaesthesia, Emergency medicine and Acute Medicine are provided a well-structured and individualised training environment, Rotating HMO2 and 3 doctors are well supported. Both groups undergo significant orientation and credentialing in their role.

Training includes basic ICU skills, echocardiography and ultrasound, simulation based skills and team building. Education is strongly supported and multidisciplinary training is undertaken whenever possible.
