"Knowledge is like fine wine. The researcher brews it, the scientific paper bottles it, the peer review tastes it, the journal sticks a label on it, and archive systems store it carefully in a cellar. Splendid! Just one small problem: wine is only useful when somebody drinks it. Wine in a bottle does not quench thirst. Knowledge Translation (KT) opens the bottle, pours the wine into a glass, and serves it."

Research resources @ Austin

The library provides links to many evidence based practice resources including: clinical practice guidelines; systematic review databases; clinical queries; and evidence updates. These resources are broadly grouped by discipline and are available via the library website.

OvidSP (provider of the Medline and Embase platforms) has created two useful videos covering evidence based research using the PICOT tool:

Author academy – why publish?

BioMed Central (BMC) provides a guide on writing and publishing a scientific manuscript. BMC explain: why English provides the broadest possible audience; that good writing increases your chances of acceptance for publication, and provides a guide to what peer review journal editors are looking for when reading your research.

Are you asking the right research question for the best results?

Formulating answerable questions - is an academic paper outlining useful alternatives to PICO (problem, intervention, comparison, outcome) showing that in different fields - medicine, occupational therapy, social work, oncology - using a slightly different approach to constructing a question may be more applicable or gain different search results.

EndNote - essential for researchers

Are you thinking of undertaking some research or additional study? The EndNote reference management software will enable you to store your references and easily create a 'correctly styled' bibliography as you write your paper.

The library provides sessions on all aspects of EndNote where you can learn how to manage your research right from the start. Book in today!

Embracing appropriate medical intensity – when less is not always more!

In this review paper the authors discuss medical intensity and new approaches to patient care as medicine becomes more scientific - driven by research and evidence. They compare high & low admission hospitals and then compare patient outcomes. They conclude by saying "figuring out who is likely to benefit from intensive therapy and who will do fine without is critically important - and not just for the bottom line. Indeed, patients' lives depend on it". Burke & Jha
