About us

The Department of Neurology provides comprehensive consultative services, diagnostic testing and treatment for neurological conditions which include diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.

The 30 bed ward on 6 East in the modern Austin Tower has a four bed Acute Stroke Care Unit and three dedicated video/EEG monitored rooms for patients with epilepsy. Outpatients are seen weekly in one of 10 neurology clinics at either the Austin or Heidelberg Repatriation Hospitals. Tests including EEG, EMG and Vascular ultrasound to help diagnose problems of the nervous system are performed in our Neurodiagnostics Laboratory on 6 North also in the Austin Tower.

Our department consists of more than 100 physicians, scientists, nursing and allied health professionals, many of whom have gained national and international recognition for their clinical and/or research efforts.

Major achievements

  • Opening the first stroke care unit in Australia
  • Introducing brain surgery to the routine care of patients with epilepsy in Australia
  • Discovering numerous genes that contribute to neurological diseases

Standard setting in research and care

Austin Health co-located with the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health hosts one of the nation's largest hospital-based neuroscience research programs, and our department's investigators and clinicians have pioneered a number of research breakthroughs. We focus on all phases of the discovery continuum, including:

  • Basic research in the genetics and biochemistry of brain function
  • Translational studies linking lab findings with potential new approaches to treatment
  • Clinical trials testing the safety and effectiveness of new treatments
  • Advanced imaging techniques to better understand the structure and function of the brain in health and disease

Many of our physicians bridge the gap between the clinic and laboratory, looking in their research for potential solutions to problems observed while caring for patients. This integrated approach hastens development of better ways to treat and prevent neurological disorders.
