New approaches to risk prediction
Substantial advances have been made in the treatment of breast cancer however it is still an increasing public health problem. Authors review and summarise recent data on "new approaches to risk prediction, available approaches to prevention, how new approaches may be made and the difficult problem of using what we already know to prevent breast cancer in populations".

Effect of radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery for ductal carcinoma in situ
"Four randomized studies show that adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) lowers the risk of subsequent ipsilateral breast events (IBEs) after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) by approximately 50% after 10 to 15 years". Authors present 20 years of follow-up data for the SweDCIS trial.

"In 2010, there were 7,449 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in Australian women aged 50-69. This is the equivalent to 300 new cases per 100,000 women, and makes breast cancer the most common cancer affecting Australian women. Incidence has remained steady at around 300 per 100,000 women for over a decade." AIHW
Future reports in this series will include an increased target age range from 50-69 to 50-74 as a result of the Australian Government 2013-2014 budget committment of $55.7 million over 4 years.

Australian hospital statistics 2013-14: emergency department care
Almost 7.2 million emergency department presentations were reported by public hospital emergency departments in Australia during 2013-14. Nationally, the proportion of emergency department visits completed in 4 hours or less increased from 64% to 73% between 2011-12 and 2013-14.

Australian hospital statistics 2013-14: elective surgery waiting times
This report finds that in 2013-14 public hospitals in Australia admitted almost 700,000 patients from elective surgery waiting lists. Cardio-thoracic surgery and vascular surgery had the shortest median waiting times (18 days and 19 days respectively). The median waiting time for Indigenous Australians was higher than for other Australians (41 days and 36 days respectively). 

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and chronic kidney disease: Australian facts mortality
This report describes the combined burden of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and chronic kidney disease, presenting mortality statistics and trends. "It examines age and sex characteristics, and variations across population groups, including among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, by geographical location, and by socioeconomic disadvantage." AIHW

A recent comprehensive international review by Professor David Hare et al., discusses the increased mortality and morbidity rates in patients with both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression. The authors conclude "there is sufficient evidence to support the introduction of exercise, talking therapies, and anti-depressant medications to reduce depression in CVD patients".
