BMJ establishes an independent Statins Review Panel

Following the ABC's removal of its controversial two-part Catalyst program -October 2013- that questioned the cholesterol-lowering benefits of statins, BMJ has announced the establishment of an independent Statins Review Panel to investigate potential errors in evidence published by authors, Dr John Abramson from Harvard Medical School and British cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, in their respective studies published by BMJ.

This review is an update of a 2011 overview of systematic reviews which "synthesises the evidence, irrespective of disease, medicine type, population or setting, on the effectiveness of interventions to improve consumers' medicines use."

 

Images of diseases app

A new interactive educational app for medical students and practitioners that catalogues thousands of images of diseased tissue is now available, compliments of the Museum of Human Disease and UNSW's Department of Pathology.

"The Images of Disease app is intended to promote learning about disease processes and their effects on human tissues and organs. It includes views of gross pathology and histopathology, with selected images appended by diagnostic imaging investigations and clinical and autopsy images." Source

Kidney Health Week - Australia wide awareness campaign on the impact of kidney disease.

  • Kidney Health Australia's State of the Nation paper -soon to be released- will contain the latest statistics and recommendations in kidney health across Australia.
  • This week will also highlight the KidneyCheck program - the first Australian self-management program for people diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. Developed by Kidney Health Australia, "this program allows you to conveniently check your urine for protein - one of the first signs of kidney damage".

Macular Degeneration Week - Macular Disease Foundation Australia

  • This week a new edition has been launched of the Foundation's Eating for eye health - the macular degeneration cookbook.
  • Eyes on the future: a clear outlook on age-related macular degeneration - Deloitte Access Economics Report May 2014. This report, commissioned to coincide with the awareness week, provides the most current, comprehensive compilation of MD statistics and latest research ever undertaken in Australia.
