Hospital Medical Officers (HMOs)

We offer a varied training program for our HMOs including streams for general, medical and surgical.

HMO2 positions

Austin Health's HMO2 (PGY2) year offers a variety of rotations with training programs broadly divided into three streams:

  • HMO2 general stream
  • HMO2 medical stream (includes a regional pathway)
  • HMO2 surgical stream. 

Each stream is designed to provide a variety of rotations and experiences to support career development and training/entry requirements.

Please note: Austin Health offers multi-year contracts for succcessfully matched HMO2 candidates (candidates will have the option to accept a one, two or three year appointment, depending on their training stream).

HMO2 applications

Our HMO2 positions will be filled via the PMCV Allocation and Placement Service conducted through the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV).  Therefore, applications must be made to both Austin Health and the PMCV.

HMO2 applicants interested in either the General or Surgical streams will only need to apply once to Austin Health.  Within the application process, applicants will have the opportunity to preference which of these two streams they wish to preference first and second (if applicable).

HMO2 applicants interested in the Medical/BPT stream will need to apply separately via the Austin Health website for this stream as well as via the PMCV website for the BPT1/BPT2 stream.  This application is separate to the other HMO2 streams.

Application Process and Requirements:

1. Refer to the PMCV website for APS guidelines and dates, and register with PMCV for the Computer Match.

2. Apply to Austin Health via our Careers website.  Applicants will be required to complete our online application form and upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), a professional/non-clinical reference, evidence of COVID-19 Vaccination or Medical Exemption and a photo.  After completing and submitting your application, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application.

3. Applicants who are successfully shortlisted will be advised via email with further advice on selection processes.

HMO3+ positions

As a large tertiary training health service, we offer a large variety of HMO3 (PGY3 and 3+) oppotunities to continue to support clinical development, experience and training. 

In addition to our highly successful General, Medical and Surgical streams, Critical Care opportunities are also available as part of our HMO3 training program.
