Austin Pain Management is a dynamic, inter-professional team of experienced clinicians. The team consists of pain-medicine specialists, rehabilitation specialists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists and nurses. We manage people who have complex pain issues with an emphasis on empowering people to self manage their situation.
The Pain Service runs assessment and treatment outpatient clinics and education programs on pain management. Patients who are referred to the Pain Service are triaged and the appropriate pathway is decided upon with the aim that the majority of patients referred will participate in a STEPS program. STEPS is a short program which provides an introduction to understanding persistent pain and how to deal with persistent pain. (STEPS was developed by Dr. Stephanie Davies and her team of experts in pain management in Perth, WA.) Following the STEPS program, patients are offered further appointments with the Pain Service, if required.
To access the outpatient Pain Service, a referral can be made to the Health Independence Program (These referrals may be made by any clinician).
