Renal Social Work Service

Living with chronic kidney disease may affect many aspects of a patient's life. The Renal Social Worker assists patients, their carers and family adjust to the changes that kidney disease brings, helping them to maintain their quality of life.

Patients, carers and families might be concerned about:

  • The illness, treatment and/or recovery
  • A range of emotions and changes to lifestyle, independence and future plans
  • Finances, legal matters, income, work or study
  • Accommodation
  • Leaving hospital and obtaining services that might provide assistance
  • The experience of caring for someone with chronic kidney disease

The Renal Social Worker provides the following services:

  • Counselling
  • Grief & loss support
  • Advocacy
  • Education & information
  • Referring to appropriate services

These services are available to Renal inpatients, outpatients and dialysis patients treated under Austin Health.
