General information

  • Cease smoking immediately if you have not already done so
  • Continue all medications unless you are advised otherwise
  • Patients undergoing valve surgery must have a dental check before admission for surgery
  • Start planning for your recovery period and return to home i.e.:
    • transport home
    • help at home with housework/shopping

Pre admission clinic

Cardiac surgery runs a pre-admission clinic on Monday an Tuesday afternoons. You may be required to attend the clinic to be assessed by the medical, the anaesthetic and nursing staff.

A Cardiac Surgery Liaison Nurse from the Austin Health will phone you prior to your admission to hospital and discuss all of the above points.

Admission process

Admissions for cardiac surgery need to present to Elective admissions at the time given to you by the Cardiac Surgery Liaison Nurse unless you are for Day of Surgery Admission (DOSA) whereby you will report to the DOSA area on level 2 at 7am on the day of your surgery.

From Elective Admissions you will be escorted to the Cardiac Surgery Ward where the nurse looking after you will meet you.

You will also meet and be interviewed/examined by other members of the Cardiac Surgery team including Doctors, Pharmacist, Physiotherapist, Anaesthetist and Ward Clerk.

After admission you will have several tests which will include an ECG, Chest X-ray and blood tests.

Your chest and leg hair will be clipped and you will be given a special soap to wash with prior to surgery.

You are encouraged to send all of your valuables and belongings home before surgery. The only items you will need in the immediate post - operative period are toiletries and slippers.
