8 North is a 32-bed orthopaedics and plastics unit, treating both elective and trauma patients. As a major referral centre for spinal injuries, a great deal of both trauma and elective patients are those with spinal fractures and injuries, not resulting in para/quadriplegia. The Orthopedic unit consists of 4 teams, each team providing one position for the Registrar Training program in Orthopaedics. In 2003, in conjunction with La Trobe University, Austin Health began running the Orthopedic Certificate course for nurses, with optional rotations through orthopaedics, rehabilitation and spinal. Our Plastic Surgery team in conjunction with General Surgery excels in breast reconstruction procedures, ranging from tissue expanders to tram flaps.
