Speech Pathology services are available to all inpatients in both acute and rehabilitation settings who have swallowing and communication problems during their admission.


The Austin Health Speech Pathology service provides assessment and management for adult outpatients presenting with swallowing and communication impairments as a result of acute, chronic or degenerative conditions. Communication impairments may include speech, voice or language difficulties.


The Speech Pathology Department provide outpatient services for patients whose presenting health condition is currently being managed by a specialist medical/surgical/mental health unit at Austin Health. 

Requests from external healthcare providers will be considered on a case by case basis for specialist Speech Pathology services that are not available in the community, including for specialist diagnostic instrumental assessments of swallowing and voice (Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS), Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), and Videostroboscopy). Clinic exclusions:

  • Patients who require ambulance transport or who are unable to mobilise safely
  • Paediatrics
  • Patients who require a home visit

Written referrals, using this template, are accepted from:

  • Austin Health inpatient health care providers (following discharge)
  • Austin Health Outpatient/Specialist clinics/ED
  • External healthcare providers in specific circumstances

Appropriate referrals will be placed on a waiting list, with appointments prioritised according to clinical urgency.
