Veteran outpatients

The Veterans’ Outpatient Physiotherapy service operates from the Health & Rehabilitation Centre and provides individual consultations plus a range of gym programs & aquatic physiotherapy sessions.

The service is available for Veterans and War Widows who may have a variety of conditions including  musculoskeletal or respiratory conditions, reduced balance and mobility or decreased exercise endurance. A limited home visit service is available.

Exercise & balance sessions

These sessions provide the opportunity to:

  • Improve your Balance
  • Improve your Fitness
  • Improve general strength
  • Familarise yourself with strategies to avoid Falls

Through general and individualised exercises with others led by a physiotherapist and therapy assistant.

Hydrotherapy

Preliminary information
  • You are required to supply your own swimsuit and towel.
  • Please do not enter the pool until the physiotherapist is in the water and instructs you to do so.
  • Before you enter the pool you must have a light shower beside the pool. You should have a thorough shower in the change room after the session.
  • You should bring warm clothing to wear following your hydrotherapy session. You should have a drink of water soon after the session.

How to Join

  • Contact the Physiotherapy Department (see contact details below)
  • Obtain a medical clearance from your GP - If necessary (the physiotherapist will advise)

If any of the following apply you must cancel your session:

  • Excess alcohol consumption in the last 24 hours.
  • You have an infection ear, cold or flu: "thrush": infection: ear infection: urinary tract infection.
  • You have a raised temperature.
  • You have an infected or open wound.
  • You have dermatitis, severe tinea or plantar warts.
  • Your blood pressure is not well controlled.
  • You have problems with your heart.
  • You have problems with your breathing
  • You have problems with continence (control of bladder and bowel)

If you are unsure, please check with physiotherapist prior to hydrotherapy.

2. Taxis

If you are not eligible for DVA booked transport. You will need to book your own taxi. Staff will book your return trip from the pool. Ask the taxi driver for receipts, so you can claim reimbursement.

3. Driving

If you are able to drive yourself, there is parking available on site, including some disable parking spaces. Maps are available on request.

4. Travel Expenses

You can claim reimbursement from DVA for travel expenses by taxi or private car. You will need a DVA Travelling Expenses claim form signed by physiotherapy staff.

Tuesday & Thursday exercise sessions

Low impact cardiovascular exercise class for approximately one hour, plus the opportunity to perform individual exercise programs in an equipped gym: treadmills, exercise bicycles, rowing machine, pulleys, weight, step machine, leg press etc. Some people omit the class, and do only gym work.

Vietnam & younger veterans gym sessions

These sessions provide the opportunity to undertake a personalised program tailored to individual goals and medical conditions.

This may include exercise to:

  • Improve your Fitness
  • Improve muscle tone and strength
  • Improve flexibility
  • Target potential or problem areas

Sessions are supervised by a Physiotherapist and Therapy Assistant
