Meet the Australian and Victorian Pharmacy Resident of the Year

Jacinta Castello has been named as both the Australian and Victorian Pharmacy Resident of the Year by the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia.

23 November 2019

"It's a huge honour. I feel very proud and overwhelmed by the amount of support I've received.

"My favourite thing about being a pharmacist is the everyday interactions with patients and being part of a team that contributes to excellent patient care," said Jacinta.

Austin Health's Director of Pharmacy, Kent Garrett said that this award is testament to Jacinta's dedication and commitment to her patients.

"She always goes above and beyond. She's a great pharmacist, a great educator, and a great team player.

"She's truly a remarkable young pharmacist, with a fantastic future ahead of her," said Kent.

Jacinta was recognised by the Society of Hospital Pharmacists for her 12-month research project into opioid usage by patients who've had a total knee or hip replacement.  Opioid use is a key priority for medication safety across Australia and the subject of increasing clinical and community focus.

"I would call patients three weeks post discharge from hospital to see what medications they're on and how they're travelling with Rehabilitation to help with their pain management."

Through her work, there's now a greater understanding of opioid prescribing at crucial transitions of care for patients from hospital to home.

"I found that Austin Health clinicians are very responsible in their prescription of opioids for pain management."

Jacinta started as an intern at Austin Health just under four years ago.

"I then got into Austin Health's first Pharmacy Residency Program."

She's thankful for the mentorship and opportunities provided to her at Austin Health.

"I'd like to thank everyone who's helped me along the way.

"I'd especially like to thank Clinical Education Pharmacist, Tim Tran, Senior ED Pharmacist, Andrew Harding and Pharmacy Student Co-ordinator, Belinda Richardson for all their support and the encouragement they've given me."

Jacinta is currently working on our Renal Ward in the transplant and patient care space.

Nurse Unit Manager, Suzanne Johnson said that Jacinta is an integral member of their team.

"The knowledge that Jacinta has in particular of renal specific medications is amazing.

"Jacinta is wonderful, we are all so proud of her and feel very fortunate to have her on our team,"said Suzanne.
