Postgraduate Intensive Care Nursing students at Austin Health will undertake a Graduate Certificate of Specialty Nursing Practice Intensive Care stream, in conjunction with our partner, Deakin University. Students complete coursework and clinical assessments in a structured program with our dedicated education team. The Intensive Care Unit at Austin Health is well known for its teaching and research. The unit specialises in cardiac and thoracic surgery, acute hepatic failure, liver transplantation, spinal injuries, and is a leader in acute renal failure. Our well established clinical program allows you to gain experience in all of these specialties.
Students within the ICU/HDU Foundations program will undertake a program of study days and clinical skill development over a 12-month period. This will include an introduction to care of ventilated patients and high dependency nursing care skills, nursing management of inotrope infusions and invasive monitoring. Further clinical practice development includes non-invasive ventilation and management of invasive lines.

Austin Health's Department of Intensive Care provides vocational training for RACP, CICM based trainees and is accredited C24 with the CICM. Anaesthesia, Medicine and Emergency Medicine trainees also rotate through the ICU.
The ICU recruits registrars twice per year, in February and August. This allows positions to be made available to trainees returning from overseas placements. These positions are at ICU/Perioperative Fellows (3), Senior Registrars (2), Junior Registrars (14). We also offer formal rotations for ICU trainees to anaesthesia (5x6 months), general medicine, rural ICU (2x6 months), 2nd and 3rd year HMOs rotate through the ICU in junior medical roles.
We support a number of Australian and overseas research fellows in both clinical and non-clinical roles. Opportunities exist for appropriately credentialed and visa eligible fellows to rotate through Warringal ICU and Epworth Eastern for salary support. For further enquiries, please contact
